As soon as the rumors of Georges St-Pierre’s multi-fight contract with UFC started flying, the odds makers started taking bets on his next opponent. The list of possible opponents is topped by the reigning UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping (30-7), who is currently sidelined due to knee surgery.
GSP (25-2) used to be one of the biggest draws in the Octagon, but left the UFC in 2013 after dominating the division for several years and therefore deserves another shot at the title and also due to the fact both fighters have been lobbying for this fight for months. However, ‘The Count’ is recovering from a knee surgery and is expected to be back to full fitness within the next month or so.
St Pierre made nine consecutive defenses of his title, a record that still stands. When he beat Johny Hendricks in a split decision, ‘Rush’ shocked everyone by announcing his retirement. Now as he is all set to sign a new multimillion dollar UFC contract, he will be aiming nothing but winning titles, which automatically makes Bisping his No.1 target.
However, Bisping is not the only name that has been linked with the former champion. In the last few years, UFC has grown incredibly well and the quality has gone up tenfold and fighters like Yoel Romero are waiting in the wings to get a well-deserved title shot. The UFC president has already said that when Bisping is back, Romero gets his chance. If this happens, GSP will have to wait for his title shot a bit longer.
There is no doubt that Bisping-GSP fight will be one of the biggest fights of the year, as both are considered legends of the game who have spent their whole life in the Octagon. Let’s wait and see what happens.
